Andrea Baerwald and I have been chosen to present Robots Roaming the Curriculum at the 2014 NCCE Conference in Seattle, WA. We are always excited to share what we are doing in our classrooms, as well as learning from others. This is just another reason to look forward to Spring.
Andrea and I had a great group of teachers in our beginning robotics strand. We focused on integrating the robotics to current curriculum to help meet Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. https://sites.google.com/site/robotsroamingthecurriculum/ After having made new contacts and expanding my personal learning network to encompass national and international projects, a Google Group has been established so that participants can continue sharing ideas and perhaps pursue new opportunities in education.
On Day 2, we completed presentations and then worked to identify or define innovative and transformative. Our group took it one step further and designed a model for K-12 education that focused on the relationships between students, teachers, parents, and the community. The following TED Talk mirrors our feelings about how the educational system should function.
In addition to the renewal of a purpose for education, Day 1 of the Summit included presentations by innovators from around the globe. It was very humbling and inspiring. Educational equity, robotics, web 2.0 tools, and STEM were just a few. #radsummit
"What is the purpose of education?"
Although this seems like a simple question, there is quite a lot of complexity to the possible answers that we discussed at the Summit. Even though our group may not have been able to agree on all aspects, there were many inspiring ideas. Completing the finishing touches to my 8 minute presentation for Thursday at the Radical Innovation Summit. I'm looking forward to sharing our innovative ways at Galileo.
After reviewing the list of participants for the Innovation Summit, I believe I might be the only one from an elementary school. It will be interesting to see what I can bring to the discussion table. I may have been the only classroom teacher that applied, but it still makes me wonder about the possible gap between research and the classroom? This is one of the reasons I am pursuing my Ed.D. in Educational Technology.
Tickets have been booked for the travel to D.C. I will be staying at the Melrose Hotel of Washington D.C. at 2430 Pennsylvania Ave. I will have 8 minutes to present what Galileo is doing in our elementary engineering and then there is time for questions and answers. Looking forward to sharing and learning!
